Pink cocaine turns up in UN reports, A list parties, celebrity scandal. But what's really concerning is that it's adding to polydrug use. As one doctor said, "No one just takes a pill anymore."
Energy Control have been testing batches of pink cocaine since 2019 in the name of harm reduction and have found the most common ingredient aside from pink dye and strawberry flavouring, is still caffeine, ketamine (a dissociative psychedelic), and MDMA (a stimulant and psychedelic). A wide range of other substances, show up less commonly, though never, interestingly, cocaine. Their conclusion: “every gramme is different.”
I’m sorry to inflict another post related to the sad events in Argentina last week but I am really morbidly fascinated in a horrible way by psychoactive drug use. It is a manifestation of pain, misery, escapism, human bondage, of loneliness, a desperation and a celebration perhaps. It’s by no means all bad, but it is often bad. And sad. Drug addiction is a desperately lonely place to die. Yet, ironically, if you were dying and in pain I bet you’d be crying out for drugs. We need them. It’s a case of which ones, when, and what for.
We never talk about it properly. We never examine the need for this in people’s lives. Or where the urge comes from. How we can manage it more healthily. And which drugs might be able to help us improve lives, rather than destroy.
Liam Payne’s death has allowed the lives of the multitude of drug taking humans to be discussed a bit more openly.
What’s clear, in the multitude of different recipes that there are for pink cocaine, or tuci, is that the original ingredients are not, that, harmful in the hands of an experienced and measured drug user. They do exist you know.
Professor David Nutt’s 2010 harm scale rated the actual dangers of various drugs by their harm to self and society. (Alcohol, heroin and crack, and meth at the top). MDMA and psychedelics at the bottom. Ket in middle.
This makes the original recipe tuci/pink cocaine ingredients all medium to very low in risk and harms, ket, mdma and psychedelics. But in combination, what’s known as polysubstance use, all this changes.
Meth, which shows up frequently in tuci alongside viagra, is a far more serious drug and very addictive. Meth is a drug linked to high risk sexual behaviour. I am told that on the gay scene it is expected that meth be the third ingredient (alongside viagra) in pink cocaine designed to be used for ‘chemsex’. If you have seen Baby Reindeer then you know what chemsex or ‘party and play’ is, but here’s a link if you are curious.
I never thought I’d become a worried middle aged maternal figure fretting over drugs and the yoof. But the thought of a teen on meth in any context is so alarming, alarming in a way that a teenager getting their hands on original pink cocaine mix is less so.
I wrote about this the pink thing in The Times.
