CAN QUOTE PORN SAVE ME FROM PROCRASTINATION and THE CUPBOARD?
"He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence" is the prevaricators caveat among Blake's useful Proverbs of Hell. Is there anything in there that can help me escape The Cupboard?
This is the Preambleramble
“The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom”
There are 70 of William Blake's Proverbs of Hell written one after the other. Bish, bash bosh. These proverbs appear in Blake's short and faintly surreal work The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, which is one of those books I buy regularly because I am always giving copies away. The hell proverbs are meant to mimic Biblical proverbs but aren’t intended to be read by way of Mr Satan Claus. Blake’s proverbs are packed with great advice, while the Book of Proverbs in the Bible is cruel, shade-throwing, nigh on abusive with all its scorn and shame poured on sluggards and sloths. Blake is so loving, kind, reasonable, compassionate, gentle.
The first of his proverbs I discovered somewhere or other would end up being carried around in my mind like a get out of jail free card. “The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom,” saved me from overly regretting the misspent bits of my life. It is supplemented by another proverb later on in the list, “You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough.” (It’s a shame I can’t apply this to the length of my substacks.)
